Children’s Dentistry
Start your child’s dental journey on the right foot
Caring for your kids dental health
You know how vital it is that you visit the dentist. But did you know that bringing your child along is one of the most important things you can do for them too – and from an earlier age than you may think?
The British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD) suggests taking your child for their first dental visit no later than their first birthday.
There are plenty of reasons for this. Firstly, making your child comfortable at the dentist from an early age can help prevent the dental anxiety that almost half the population suffer from according to the Oral Health Foundation. Secondly, the treatment of childhood issues like early tooth decay and overcrowding can prevent any major tooth damage later in life. And finally, the earlier we can educate you and your child on how to best care for their teeth, the better for everyone!

If you’ve left it later than this to bring your little one or bigger kid to see us, don’t worry. We offer support, guidance and treatments with a smile – not judgment – and we’ll simply be glad to see you and help them now.
No matter their age, we aim to not only make your child’s visits to the dentist useful and informative, but fun and exciting too! We love interacting with kids and making them feel relaxed at Dental House. All our staff are experienced at talking to and treating children, and many of them are parents themselves – the best possible training you can get!
Treatments for your children
Children have unique dental needs, and there are some treatments that are best performed while they’re still growing. By looking after your child’s teeth now, you can prevent problems that could arise in adulthood.
What to expect on your child's first visit
We know that bringing your child to the dentist for the first time can be daunting for both you and them. But it doesn’t have to be.
Our dentists are kind, caring, compassionate and fully trained to treat children. We strive to put your little one completely at ease from the moment they enter our doors.
Your child will get to know their dentist and learn to trust them, as we examine their mouths gently and, if they’re old enough to talk, answer any questions they might have – no matter how silly they seem! (Questions from parents are welcomed too.)
Our Hygienist and Therapist Lucy has vast experience in treating children and is always on hand to help put them at ease. Dedicated to providing the highest standards of paediatric dentistry, we aim to transform the smiles and life-long oral hygiene of all our little patients.
On the first visit, we’ll assess any cavity risks and chat through signs that dummies and thumb-sucking may be influencing normal tooth growth.
We’ll also share tips and advice for maintaining optimum oral health at home, including brushing techniques, flossing, and the things to include or exclude from your child’s diet.
We have no doubt they’ll leave with a huge grin on their face, and a healthy one at that!
Routine examinations
As tooth decay can build up early, especially in the back teeth, it is important to monitor young teeth to prevent tooth loss or the need for fillings. A special programme of home care can be discussed and put into place for any at-risk teeth.
Sealants
A plastic coating can be applied to the surface of teeth in liquid form. This hardens to provide a barrier that keeps food particles and bacteria from getting trapped in the natural grooves of the teeth, and can help prevent decay.
Fluoride treatments
Fluoride binds to the enamel of teeth, making it harder and more resistant to decay. Although there’s small amount of fluoride in toothpastes and in some drinking water, a higher concentration can be applied professionally to your child’s teeth for maximum protection. Some children may require the use of additional oral fluoride supplements.
Extractions
Sometimes, teeth may need to be removed due to decay or infection, or to aid in the proper development of the dental arch. In some cases, children may develop an extra tooth, which can be removed to allow the remaining teeth to align correctly.
Fillings
If your child has a little bit of tooth decay, they may need a small filling, which is available in our tooth-coloured materials. Simply put, we’ll remove the decay and then fill the tooth to restore it.*
*Please note that amalgam (silver, metal-based) fillings are no longer offered to children under 15 years, except when deemed strictly necessary on the grounds of specific medical needs of the patient. This also applies to pregnant or breastfeeding women.
