Gum Disease Treatment
Looking after your gums is just as important as looking after your teeth
Gum disease and bad breath
Want healthy teeth? Then you need healthy gums. Looking after your gums is just as important as looking after your teeth – they surround the tooth right from the crown to the root in the jaw and help to support a healthy mouth.
If you’re experiencing bleeding gums, loose teeth or bad breath, you might have periodontal disease – or gum disease, as it’s more commonly known – a condition where the tissues surrounding the teeth become inflamed. Its primary cause is plaque, a film which sticks to the teeth and root. If plaque is not removed through good oral hygiene it hardens into calculus (or tartar), which can only be removed through professional cleaning or gum disease treatment.
Although it cannot be cured, gum disease can be controlled. We do this with deep cleaning, and education about brushing in the most effective way to minimise the bacteria around your gums.
Even if you don’t suffer from any of these issues, we’ll always check for gum disease during your regular appointments with us. Some people are symptom- and pain-free for years before gum disease is detected, but with proper treatment and care, we can keep your gums – and your smile – intact and looking lovely!
